25.04.2005 About the first working meeting under the Interpol project "Kalkan"
On April 20-21, 2005, the first working meeting under the project «Кalkan» with a theme of «Terrorism in the Central Asia» organized by the Interpol and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan took place in Almaty (the Republic of Kazakhstan) in which more than 70 participants from 31 countries of the world including observers from the United Nations and the SCO participated.
By an invitation of the General Secretary of the Interpol the deputy Director of the Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure took part in the meeting and had a speech, who informed participants of the meeting about the activity of the RATS SCO in the struggle against terrorism, separatism and extremism. It had become the first contact of the RATS SCO with the Interpol since formation of the Structure at which the issues of strengthening cooperation between the RATS SCO and Interpol in the antiterrorist sphere.
The project "Кalkan" is called for developing the versatile assistance to the countries of Central Asia in carrying out the investigations connected with terrorism and religious extremism, improving and expanding methods of counterterrorist activity.
The basic attention of the project "Kalkan" is concentrated on collecting the information which will allow to establish the communications existing at a regional and international level, and will allow to coordinate activities of law enforcement bodies more effectively in revealing, preventing and suppressing activities of the terrorist organizations and some of their members.
The prospects of practical cooperation upon the issues of fighting against display of terrorism and religious extremism, developing the versatile approach of assistance to Central Asian and neighboring countries in carrying out the investigations connected with terrorism were discussed at the meeting.
The issues of perfection and expansion of the methods used in counterterrorist activity, increase of a role of the Interpol in rendering assistance and the practical help upon revealing and exposing the criminal and terrorist organizations were discussed.
